Hey fellow Super Dads… Josh here.
I’ve been thinking a lot about being a Dad, what that means, am I doing a good job, etc. In October, I was let go from my job and since then I’ve been looking for work. I know something will be out there and I’m looking for the RIGHT gig. Anyway, a part of that whole process has been doing more freelance and learning stuff. So I’m in this phase of evaluating things.
I’ve been learning more about myself and I think that when we started this show, I thought we’d get together and hash stuff out and I think we’re still doing that.
I want more though. I want more honesty; from myself really. I pretty much have nothing figured out, including parenting. And I think that I need to dive more into my role as a Dad and figure out what I really think about my role and where that fits in. To be completely honest, there’s days when I’m tired and frustrated and I think I’m a complete d-bag of a person to be around and I think that that comes through into my relationships with my family.
The show, to me, should have that in it and I think that it will. I like us doing the news stuff, but I want us to dive into some more weighty topics. We’ve touched on some, but I want to be challenged with stuff and think more about what I think.
Someone said recently in a review of the show they wish that I stuck to my guns and said more of what I thought. I think we’re going to do more of this. I’ve been pulling my punches somewhat because my views on things haven’t been completely baked, but no more. If I have an opinion, I’ll speak up.
Here’s some stuff I’m thinking about that we will do in the coming year.
Guests I’ve been the stumbling block here. I think that having guests on the show is great, but I need to invest more time in getting people on, and also making it engaging for the listener. If you would like to be a guest, I’ll be making a form that you can fill out that will help me in scheduling, etc.
More broad topics We talked about education for a bit, but I wanna talk about stuff that no one else is talking about. I wanna talk about stuff like religion, parenting issues from people who didn;t have great relationships with their Dads, Dads who have kids with learning disabilities or mental disabilities, divorced Dads, Dads who themselves are disabled, etc.
Not to say that I want to always go for more controversial topics, but I think historically I’ve been playing it safe. It’s time to kick it up a notch.
More writing I’d like to have more of a presence for the show online. I think that we could then use these articles for the show. If you have any ideas for articles, etc. write them and send them to us, I’d love to have more people’s takes on things.
More random stuff We sometimes go on tangents about The Walking Dead, etc. on the show, I think that we’re going to include more of this. Maybe we write more stuff too that is more pop culture related and how it relates to being a parent. Who knows, but we’re gonna try to be true and authentic to ourselves and that’s a big component.
An emphasis on stuff that we like Shaun and I are both into food and fitness. I fell off the wagon, but plan on getting back on. We’ll probably start baking that into the show.
Tangent Idea: I’d love to have a fitness program with our listeners. Dads who wanna get in shape. Maybe #dadfitness tag on twitter? Let’s do it!
The same things that work When we started this show, to be honest, I saw it as a hobby and an excuse to get together with Shaun and laugh about life. We’re still going to do this. We may include other people into this mix on a more regular basis.
Less advertising, but more marketing
I have to say, I think at the beginning of this whole thing I was worried about monetizing when I should be worried about making a quality show that people want to listen to on a regular basis. We have our fans, and we love you guys, but we should’ve been focusing on you guys and not on making beer money. That’s on me. So, we’re done with advertising until we get our numbers higher and it makes more sense to do.
We may go on other shows, or talk about other stuff on other shows, etc. who knows.
All in all, we’re still rockin’ out. Stay tuned for new things in the new year from us!! Thanks for listening!!
